Gardens extended their winning run to three matches in the Eastern Cape Super 12 Club rugby competition when they defeated Park 23-14 in a closely fought match at the Derrick Ferreira Stadium in Uitenhage at the weekend.
Gardens made their intentions clear from the start when they put Park under pressure in the opening minutes and their efforts were rewarded when they were offered a penalty inside Park half. Flyhalf Rubin De Vos converted to give Gardens a 3-0 lead.
They increased that lead immidiately when they scored a beautiful try in the early stages of the game.
Fullback Renaldo Lewis rounded off a beautiful team move to score in the corner. De Vos converted for a 10-0 lead.
De Vos, who was having a brilliant game, followed that with another penalty in the 19th minute to stretch Gardens lead to 13-0.
At this stage Gardens was dominating all facets of the game and their backs were maximizing the front foot ball they were getting from their dominant forwards.
It was no suprise when centre Duwayne Prince received the ball from a set piece and sliced through through Park backs to score under the poles. De Vos converted to give Gardens a solid 20-0 at Halftime.
In the second half Park came back with a different strategy. They kept the ball in hand and that forced Gardens into making unforced errors. They were rewarded for that early pressure with a try from their impressive blind side flanker Wikus Van Rooyen. Flyhalf Hugo Swanepoel converted to trail Gardens by 20-7.
Gardens’ flyhalf Rubin De Vos left boot then split the poles with a drop goal from halfway line to increase Gardens lead to 23-7.
Park played in patches. They looked sharp with the ball but failed to capitalize on some of the opportunities that presented.
They were eventually awarded a try after a Gardens player knocked the ball in the home side’s 22m area and Fullback Billy Mentoor ran through to dot the try. Replacement fullback Vlam Garcia converted to move the score to 23-14.
Gardens were dominant in the last minutes of the match but they committed mistakes at critical moments of the match.
Gardens flyhalf Rubin De Vos was named man of the match after a sterling performance from him.
