Swallows wins a thriller in Humansdorp

Swallows flanker Billy Dutton brushes aside a would-be defender on his way to the try line

2018 Champions Swallows beat Kruisfontein United 36-38 in a closely contested match in Humansdorp on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams started out like a house on fire as they both targeted this fixture to claim semi-final spots. However, it was the visitors that enjoyed early dominance as their heavy packed bullied the home side forwards and were rewarded with a pushover try by flanker Billy Dutton after a solid scrum from his fellow forwards for a 0-7 lead. But Kruisfontein responded with a penalty of their own by flyhalf Xavier Felix.

Swallows then stepped up a gear and really put pressure on Kruisfontein. They dominated set pieces and the point of contact which put the home side on the backfoot. During this time they added three converted tries from inside centre Somila Mantyoyi, flyhalf Simanye Ziyokwana, and Dutton completed his brace to take the score to 3-28 at the break.

The second half belonged to the homeside. They came back a totally different side and wasted no time in the second half when they scored two quick tries by flankers Greggan Glover and Christonville Human that were both converted by Felix to narrow the gap to 17-28 to swallows. Swallows responded with a try of their own to stretch the lead to 17-35 after hooker Vuyisani Mavuso scored a beautiful try for them.

Spurred on-field by their bench and off it by their passionate supporters, the home side scored 19 unanswered points through tries from reserves Jerome Brown, Dillon Cupido, Luciano Zaterdag and two conversions from Felix to take a lead of 36-35 for the first time in the match.

Swallows flyhalf Ziyokwana slotted a penalty in the last 2minutes of the match to register a narrow 36-38 win and move to the top of the group B log with one match left in the round-robin stage.
